For the few who have been lucky enough to hear his previous efforts, Unknown Component’s discography gave prominence to the unique vocal qualities of Keith Lynch; whinging like Thom Yorke and Bob Dylan combined but with a surprising amount of heart to sweeten the bitterness. ‘Everything At Once Is Nothing All The Time’ is, if anything, even more dark humoured than before but amongst the pity there is a fine collection of songs to be discovered. ‘In Descending Circles’ and ‘I Can’t Compete’ possess a scruffy charm and warmth that befits a perennial loser in life. Then comes the stunning ‘If This, Then That’; a sprawling epic built on a fluid keyboard hook. Yet Lynch doesn’t stop there; “I’m so comfortable” he repeats on ‘Over Years And Miles’ to a backdrop of subtle breakbeats and queasy melody and when the ten-minutes of the harrowing echo-laden ‘Only To Find’ have been taken in, what’s gone before seems rather timid. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, ‘Everything At Once’ confirms Lynch as a serious artist with serious tales to tell.
