Des Moines Music Coalition Review of ‘In Direct Communication’
Unknown Component’s new CD “In Direct Communication” is one that will appeal to a variety of people.
There is definitely something about it that catches the audience’s attention as the CD progresses. Songs like “Identifying Interpretation” and “Brought Up to Be Put Down” really make you want to turn up the volume and sing along. In the past, he has been compared to Bob Dylan for his nasal sounding voice and Elliot Smith for mournful lyrics, but also could be compared to Muse or Ben Kweller in certain moments for the way his songs sound. Unknown Component has struck the middle between normal and weird. The question is, musically, is that a good thing?
The beginning of the CD starts out roughly, in that there is not much variety from song to song. Many of his words are hard to understand causing some of the emotion to be lost, leaving the listener unsure of how to connect to the music. However, despite a difficult start, the end of the CD completely redeems the artist. The music changes pace, gives out more emotion, and becomes something worth listening to. His mix of sounds forms songs that the listener can relate to and appreciate.
Unknown Component shows great potential in music. While some of the drum work leaves something to be desired, the guitar and bass parts are intricate, yet have an easy flow that proves Unknown Component has talent worth recognizing.
“In Direct Communication” will be available September 16th and can be found at www.unknowncomponent.com. If you are interested in hearing a performance, Unknown Component will be playing at Mars Café at 2318 University Ave, Des Moines, Iowa on August 25th at 7 p.m.
