It’s easy to be skeptical when you see an average guy walking to the microphone with his acoustic guitar strapped over his shoulder. You might think, “Ah man, not another acoustic cover act.” But soon you realize his original aspiring lyrics and mellow full tones are anything but average. You get pulled right into the melody and words being sung by the man that is Unknown Component.

All of Steve Lynch’s original songs have a unique style about them that will attract anyone from the easy listener to the experimental rock guru. It would be an understatement to say that making it in the music world is a challenge but Lynch is up for this challenge. He wants to make a living playing music, his way.

Lynch’s influences are pretty much set in stone as some of the best songwriters in history. Writers such as Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain and the Beatles are a place for any new musician to gain influence. “But more recently I’ve been writing music that isn’t influenced by anyone in particular,” said Lynch. The ideas that sparked Lynch’s musicianship were originality and the challenge of being a singer/songwriter.

Hardware isn’t an important subject for Unknown Component. Usually all Lynch needs to do is jack into the venue’s sound system. U.C.’s recording process doesn’t involve any specialty guitars or amplifiers either. Lynch independently produces all of his albums and does all the work for every instrument on each track. Definitely not an easy task but Lynch obviously has a natural ear for what he likes.

“I’ve always enjoyed music,” said Lynch, “but I’ve never been interested in learning to read music or accepting any specific interpretation of it.” So the theory behind Unknown Component has room to grow.

Lynch said he sees his music career heading in a good direction right now and he works hard to maintain a level of optimism and pessimism that is both beneficial and something he can be comfortable with.

Unknown Component has only performed locally but Lynch is excited about a show coming up at Silvie’s Lounge in Chicago, Ill. Show dates can be viewed online at www.unknowncomponent.com.
